Rupa & the April Fishes is a Bay Area-based musical ensemble led by Rupa Marya, a physician, writer and political activist. Formed in the early 2000s, the band creates a unique fusion of sounds by incorporating influences that include jazz manouche, Latin rhythms, Indian ragas, and French chanson. Singing in multiple languages—including English, French, Spanish, and Hindi—they explore themes of social justice, identity, and global interconnectedness. Their debut album, eXtraOrdinary rendition (2008), garnered critical acclaim for its eclectic style and social commentary. Over the years, Rupa & the April Fishes have toured internationally, sharing their music at various festivals and venues. The band continues to produce thought-provoking music that transcends borders and celebrates cultural diversity.

Rupa describes “Les abeilles” (The Bees) as “a declaration and an apology. This song was written realizing how when you give yourself to art, and when you give yourself to music your life can become a little more chaotic because your task becomes a response to the immediacy of life.” Rupa sings, “I’m sorry my love but I am just a student of life, I like to touch what’s in front of me, I like to taste what’s here.”
