A singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer and poet, Péri was born and raised in the city of Salvador, Bahia, one of the epicenters of African culture in Brazil. Bahia has produced some of Brazil’s greatest musicians, including João Gilberto and Dorival Caymmi, both among Péri’s inspirations. Now living in São Paulo, Péri’s songs have been recorded by Gal Costa, Margareth Menezes, Jussara Silveira and many other Brazilian stars. His fourth studio album Samba Passarinho (2005) earned him nominations for the Latin GRAMMY and the Prêmio da Música Brasileira (Brazilian Music Award). On top of that, Péri was awarded the Troféu Caymmi (Caymmi Trophy) and the Rumos Itaú Cultural for his work in the music industry.

Péri’s fourth album, 2005’s Samba Passarinho, which featured the Putumayo Presents Bossa Nova rendition of the José and Wilson Batista classic “Me Mundo É Hoje” (My World is Today), earned him a Latin GRAMMY nomination and many other accolades. “This is me,” Péri sings, “Whoever wants to enjoy me, this is me / My world is today / There is no tomorrow, for me.
On “O Mundo Virou” (The World Has Changed), Péri sings about the power of samba to keep one’s spirits up when everything seems to be falling apart. “The bird has stopped singing / The river has dried up / The wind doesn't want to blow anymore / Joy is over / But the sun insists on rising / Because the world keep on spinning / And only those who know how to samba stay on track.”
