China’s Yunnan province, an isolated, landlocked and mountainous region that borders Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar is home to an unexpectedly large and vibrant reggae scene. A prominent figure in this movement, Nasu Luoben, meaning "stone of the Nasu people,” is a member of the Yi ethnic group. Luoben prioritizes a strong rhythmic foundation in his music, drawing inspiration from reggae styles worldwide. A devout Rastafarian, Luoben's songs reflect his values and promote positivity, influenced by the simple lifestyle of his mountain village. When not in the studio, he actively participates in farming, cultivating crops, tending to animals, and embracing connections to the land and community.
