Mo'Kalamity (Cabo Verde)

Mo'Kalamity, née Monica Tavares, is originally from Cabo Verde and now based in Paris. She is a distinguished reggae artist renowned for her powerful voice and deep, inspirational lyrics. Growing up in France, she quickly made a name for herself in reggae as a singer, songwriter, and composer. She formed her band The Wizards in 2004. Her debut album, Warrior of Lights (2007), was a significant success. The follow-up, Deeper Revolution, earned three Cabo Verde Awards nominations in 2011. In 2013, Mo’Kalamity founded her label, Sofia-Théa Records, and has released three more albums, the most recent being 2024’s Shine, which was recorded in Jamaica and featured a long list of local music icons.

She sings of the need to appreciate our differences. “The world is made of shades of color / It is high time to learn to live and stop being afraid / Enough with prejudices and too much systematized judgment / No need to add your own facts to history / At the core, we are all just human.”
