Labess (Algeria)

Photo of Labess

Labess is led by Algerian-born Nedjim Bouizzoul, whose music blends Algerian chaâbi, African rhythms, flamenco, and Cuban son. Originally from Algiers, Bouizzoul moved to Quebec at the age of eighteen, where he began performing as a street musician before forming Labess in 2007. The band has released five albums, including Identity (2012),

The Road (2016), and Yemma (2021), the latter inspired by his two-year stay in Colombia, where he explored the African and Roma roots of Latin American music. Labess’s work often reflects themes of exile, identity, and freedom, incorporating lyrics in Arabic, Spanish, and French. Their latest album, Dima Libre, released in 2024, continues this exploration.

“Rosa Que Linda Eres” (Rosa, How Beautiful You Are), is a traditional Cuban son first recorded in 1918. Over the years, it has been reinterpreted by many popular artists including Colombia’s Carlos Vives and Totó la Momposina. Labess’ version adds a North African flavor. “My head may want to forget you / But my heart keeps loving you / God in heaven, you are so beautiful / My gaze may roam the world / But I find nothing like you... / Rosa, how beautiful you are.”
