Gypsy Chicken (Norway)

Gypsy Chicken, formed in 2018, began with a unique origin: a quirky Tinder match and a last-minute invitation to a battle of the bands. The duo, armed with ukuleles, surprisingly defeated a veteran thrash metal band, setting the stage for their unconventional musical journey. Their 2019 debut album blended eclectic sounds, driven by improvisation and collaboration with a talented percussionist and local producer. By their second album, the project had expanded into a 19-member collective, featuring musicians from across the globe, including Norway, the US, Poland, Russia, and South Africa. Known for their dynamic live performances, Gypsy Chicken's lineup ranges from a duo to an eight-piece band. Their genre-defying music explores everything from folk to hip-hop, all while maintaining a playful, yet dark, lyrical core.

“Hayani” (Home) was written by Solvei Stenslie, who wrote the melody and the Norwegian lyrics. Joanna Kreft wrote and arranged the music, and Mulalo Munyai translated the lyrics into the Southern African Tshivenḓa language. “When the world comes crashing down / When your knees are on the ground / And you feel you’re all alone / Just remember you can always come home.”
