Famara (Switzerland)

Swiss reggae pioneer Famara, born Thomas Nikles, grew up in the scenic Leimental near the Jura Mountains. Inspired by African rhythms after a 1984 percussion workshop, he transitioned from percussionist to raggamuffin singer. His debut single, “Sunshine Blubber” in 1987 marked the start of his musical journey, but it was in Gambia, performing for 15,000 people, where he gained acclaim as a "Swiss reggae star." Famara has released numerous albums, starting with Natural Fact (1999), blending reggae, dub, and world music into a unique Afro-reggae sound. His energetic live performances have graced over 500 shows and major festivals worldwide. Having shared stages with legends like Ziggy Marley and Youssou N'Dour, Famara continues to shape Swiss reggae, most recently with his 2023 album, Tembo Power.

Singing in his own unique mix of African dialects and English on “Peace”, Famara calls out for an end to war and struggle. “Freedom must come,” he calls out over a laid back reggae groove and a soulful melodica solo. Originally from his 2023 album Tembo Power, “Peace” exemplifies Famara’s distinctive sound, which draws on a variety of influences and inspirations.
