Born and raised in French Guiana, Chris Combette has been captivating audiences for decades with his enchanting blend of Caribbean, jazz, French and African music. His musical journey began with his self-taught mastery of the bass and guitar, and collaborations with notable Martinique-based musicians such as Tony Chasseur, Jocelyne Béroard and the Rastafarian banjo player Kali. Balancing his musical passion with education, Combette worked as a math teacher in France, all the while continuing to pursue his musical endeavors. In the mid-1990s, he decided to shift his focus entirely to music, releasing his debut album Plein Sud in 1995, followed by 4 more solo albums. Over the years, he has continued to captivate audiences with his heartfelt performances, solidifying his legacy as a French Caribbean musical ambassador.

On his track “Kon Oun Lotomat” (Like a Robot), which appeared on his 2011 album Les Enfants de Gorée, Combette tackles the timely topic of climate change and its impact on our mental health and relationship with nature. Combette sings about hearing reports of the thinning ozone layer and water scarcity, singing “The news keeps coming / I am a robot / Always in action / Always “busy” / Still running.” Instead of letting the news overcome him, Combette recommends returning to a slower, simpler life focused on the pleasures of the natural world, such as canoeing, fishing, and enjoying a bonfire with friends.
