Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band is an 11-piece Afrofunk orchestra from Washington DC that delves into the shared grooves of the vibrant West African and American popular music scenes. At the core of their sound is Afrobeat, a genre born in 1970s Nigeria through the inventive genius of Fela Kuti. Afrobeat is a rich blend of modern jazz, Yoruba tribal music, and pulsating James Brown-inspired funk rhythms.
In their performances, Chopteeth presents a mix of original compositions and modern renditions of African dance classics while staying true to the essence and message of the music. Band members take turns at the microphone, delivering lyrics in seven different languages.
