As a child in Zimbabwe, Gugulethu Khumalo was inspired by the music of local star Oliver Mtukudzi, as well as South African icons Hugh Masekela, Brenda Fassie and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. The sounds of southern African music resonated with her even after her family emigrated to New Zealand to escape the political and economic turmoil of their homeland. In 2011, she moved to South Africa to study and pursue her musical dreams, taking on the stage name Berita. Thanks to her soulful voice, unique style and songwriting gifts, Berita quickly became a chart-topping singer. In 2012, she released her debut “Thandolwethu” to widespread acclaim and has gone on to release four studio albums. She even realized her childhood dream, collaborating with the late Mtukudzi and Masekela, among others.

Sonically, Berita’s music is an authentic blend of soul music borrowing elements from Afro-Jazz, contemporary pop influences as well as South African dance music. Berita’s music is the soundtrack of life, her lyrical content is substantial from love lost to love found Berita is a master communicator for the heart and soul. As an extension of her music, Berita is adored for her down to earth personality, her classy, authentic and proudly African sense of style. Over the years Berita’s fashion style has blossomed much to frequent collaborations with contemporary South African and international fashion designers.
